The American Film Institute has bestowed the first award nomination on the first in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, before the film's worldwide release on December 19.
'The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring' has been nominated alongside 10 other films for Best Movie.
'Moulin Rouge', 'Shrek' and 'In the Bedroom' were also nominated in the Best Movie category.
The first annual AFI awards in 19 film and television categories will be presented on 5 January 2002 in Los Angeles.
'The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring' was also nominated for Best Editor, Best Digital Artist and Best Composer.
Todd Field's 'In The Bedroom', and Ridley Scott's 'Black Hawk Down' received five nominations each.
