An American author has won a major book award for a novel which is in comic form.
Author Chris Ware was presented with the Guardian First Book Award in London last night for his book 'Jimmy Corrigan: The Smartest Kid on Earth'.
It is the first time a graphic novel has won a major British book award.
The book is a semi-autobiographical account of a father's troubled relationship with his son, and judges praised it as "absorbing and exhilarating".
