Graphic novel wins Guardian Award

An American author has won a major book award for a novel which is in comic form.

Author Chris Ware was presented with the Guardian First Book Award in London last night for his book 'Jimmy Corrigan: The Smartest Kid on Earth'.

It is the first time a graphic novel has won a major British book award.

The book is a semi-autobiographical account of a father's troubled relationship with his son, and judges praised it as "absorbing and exhilarating".
