IMMA chair tenders resignation

The chairperson of the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Marie Donnelly, has tendered her resignation.

In a letter to Arts Minister Síle De Valera, she said that given the publicity that had accrued surrounding Dr Brian Kennedy's candidacy for the post of Director of IMMA, she was resigning from her position.

Earlier this week Ms Donnelly proposed that Dr Kennedy be offered the Directorship; however, the interview panel set up to recommend an appointment had not yet selected a candidate.

The board then accepted Ms Donnelly's recommendation, leading in turn to the resignation of two board members: Niall Crowley and Terry Prone.

Ms Donnelly was involved in a public controversy earlier this year when she advised the then director, Declan McGonagle, that she was advertising his post.

After four months he won a renewal of his contract, but he then resigned.
