George Harrison loses cancer battle

George Harrison has died after a long battle with cancer.

The 58-year-old former Beatle died yesterday at a friend's home in Los Angeles.

Mr Harrison's wife, Olivia, and his 24-year-old son Dhani were both with him when he died.

George Harrison announced that he had throat cancer in 1998 and was treated for lung cancer in May of this year.

However, in July of this year he denied that he was critically ill.

The youngest Beatle, Harrison's songwriting talent was overshadowed by that of Paul McCartney and the late John Lennon, but was responsible for some of their most celebrated songs including 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps' and 'Something'.

With a strong interest in Eastern Culture, he was the first of the 'Fab Four' to have a solo Number One with 'My Sweet Lord' from the acclaimed 'All Things Must Pass' album.

In 1971 he organised the first charity rock event, The Concert for Bangladesh.

In the 1980s he moved into film production with his company, Handmade Films, responsible for such British cinema classics as 'The Long Good Friday' and 'Withnail and I'.

In 1987 he was back in the limelight again with his solo album 'Cloud Nine', which included the hits 'Got My Mind Set on You' and 'When We Was Fab'.

In 1988 he formed the supergroup The Traveling Wilburys with Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, ELO's Jeff Lynne and the late Roy Orbison.
