US pop star dies in Zurich crash

American pop star Melanie Thornton was among the 24 people killed in an air crash near Zurich on Saturday.

Also among the dead were Maria Serrano-Serrano and Nathaly van het Ende from the all-female band Passion Fruit.

34-year-old singer Melanie Thornton was on tour publicising her solo album 'Ready to Fly'.

Her new single 'Wonderful Dream', which features in a new Coca Cola advert, was due for release on Monday.

Thornton used to front the dance act La Bouche with rapper Lane McCray. Their hits included the singles 'Be My Lover', 'Sweet Dreams' and 'Falling In Love'.

Swiss police have retrieved both flight recorders from the Crossair jet. They said it was unlikely the aircraft crashed as a result of a terrorist attack.

There were nine survivors.
