The 60-year-old directed some of the world's greatest orchestras, from the New York Metropolitan to the Vienna Philharmonic and Milan's La Scala.
Mr Garcia Navarro returned to his native Spain in 1997 to take the post of Artistic Director at Madrid's opera, a position he held until last Spring when he was forced to step down due to illness.
