'Monsoon Wedding', the story of an Indian bride who has second thoughts about an arranged marriage, has won the Golden Lion award for the Best Picture at the 58th Venice Film Festival.
Indian director Mira Nair, who gained worldwide recognition and an Oscar nomination for 'Salaam Bombay', was hailed as a "visionary woman" by Nanni Moretti, the head of the seven-member jury.
The film, shot on a hand-held camera and described by Nair as a "love song to Delhi", beat 19 other contestants for the coveted award.
The jury's runner-up prize went to 'Hund-stage', a movie about love by Austrian director Ulrich Seidl.
