Former Booker Prize winner Salman Rushdie has failed to make the grade for this year's award.
His latest novel 'Fury' is not among the twenty-four longlisted titles.
The bookies' favourite for this year's prize is 'According to Queeney' by Beryl Bainbridge, who has been shortlisted five times in the past. Melvyn Bragg and Nick Hornby are second favourites.
Rushdie's 'Fury' is due out on August 30.
