Mercury boost for McGuinness

P.J. Harvey has been nominated for the 2001 Mercury Music Award, which will be some comfort for her manager Paul McGuinness as U2 missed out.

Judges' chair Simon Frith called it "one of the more intriguing Mercury Prize shortlists, with eight debut albums on the list".

Basement Jaxx, Elbow, Goldfrapp, Gorillaz, Ed Harcourt, Tom McRae, Radiohead, Susheela Raman, Super Furry Animals, Turin Brakes and Zero 7 join Harvey on the Mercury shortlist.

The 12-strong list of British and Irish album acts reflects musical excellence, rather than sales or popularity.
