IWU to honour Sam McAughtry

The Executive Committee of the Irish Writers' Union has announced that this year's award in recognition of a writing life will go to Sam McAughtry.

The event will take place in the James Joyce Centre in North Great George's Street on 27 September, 2001.

McAughtry will receive life membership of the union on the night, following in the footsteps of Ben Kiely and James Plunkett.

McAughtry, who is well known both for his writing and his radio broadcasts, was a founder member of the Irish Writers' Union and a former Senator in Seanad Eireann.
