The European Parliament has given final approval to new laws giving artists a share of the resale price of their works.
The legislation was backed by 405 votes in favour to 101 against, with 32 abstentions.
Four EU countries, including Ireland, did not recognise artists' rights to receive a share of profits from resales, until now.
The measure will apply to original artworks valued at more than 3,000 euros, on which artists will receive a royalty of 4% of the sale price up to 50,000 euros and on a declining scale above that.
