Winnie the Pooh letters up for auction

Two letters written by illustrator E H Shepard in the guise of Winnie the Pooh are expected to fetch a total of £18,000 at auction today.

The notes, which were written 70 years ago as replies to a little boy's party invitations will go under the hammer at Christie's.

Seventy-six year old owner Dr Harry Stopes-Roe is the son of birth control pioneer Marie Stopes. He said he felt it was now a suitable time to sell the letters he received and treasured as a child.

Shepard was a friend of his mother's and was often invited to parties at their home, along with Pooh.
