Composer Whelan made freeman of Limerick

The freedom of the city of Limerick has been granted to composer Bill Whelan.

Whelan is best known as the man who composed the music for Riverdance, which first emerged during the interval of the Eurovision song contest in 1996.

Riverdance has since played to thousands of people around the world and is currently being performed by 3 separate companies.

At a ceremony at City Hall the freedom of Limerick city was also granted to financier and sportsman JP McManus.

The last person to be made a freeman of the city was former US president Bill Clinton in 1998.
