American screenwriters and film studio representatives have agreed to continue negotiations in an effort to prevent a strike by writers that could paralyse Hollywood's film and television production.
The original deadline for the conclusion of talks between the two sides passed this morning without agreement.
The writers are demanding new contract arrangements.
They want more money for films used on the Internet, Digital Television and DVD and greater industry recognition for their work.
If the strike goes ahead it is likely to be supported by actors and to shut down the industry.
