The great granddaughter of the composer Richard Wagner has been appointed head of the Bayreuth opera festival. The Richard Wagner Foundation announced yesterday that Eva Wagner-Pasquier is to take over as director of the festival by 2002. She is the estranged daughter of the current head, 81-year-old Wolfgang Wagner, who had wanted his second wife to take his place. It is still not clear whether Wolfgang Wagner will agree to step down.
