Billy Elliot sweeps London Film Critics' Awards

The film Billy Elliot took five prizes at the London Film Critics' Circle ceremony last night, including Best British Film and Best British Director. Teenager Jamie Bell drew some consolation for his Oscars disappointment by picking up the best newcomer title for his role in the film, about an aspiring ballet star.

Veteran Irish actor Richard Harris, whose movie credits include The Field, took the special achievement award. Low budget US hit Being John Malkovich won three titles, including Film of the Year and Best Director for Spike Jonze. Oscar hopefuls Julia Roberts and Russell Crowe were named as Best Actress and Best Actor.
