Downey pleads not guilty to possession charges

The actor Robert Downey Jr has pleaded not guilty to drug charges at a court appearance in Indio, California. The 35-year-old actor was charged with possessing cocaine and the prescription drug Valium and with being under the influence of a controlled substance. Mr Downey was arrested on November 25 at a hotel in Palm Springs, California, following an anonymous call to police. He is set to appear in court again on January 29, if found guilty on all charges he faces a maximum sentence of four years and eight months.

Last week Mr Downey was nominated for a Golden Globe in the Best Supporting Actor category for his role in the TV show 'Ally McBeal'. He was previously nominated for a Best Actor Oscar in 1993 for his performance in the biopic 'Chaplin'.
