Dublin's Gate Theatre has announced its first productions for 2026, featuring four major productions, including two Irish premieres and the return of an audience favourite.
The season opens on 4th February with the Irish premiere of Eureka Day by US playwright Jonathan Spector. The Tony Award-winning comedy stars Philippa Dunne from Motherland, and follows a progressive school community in Berkeley, California, facing a mumps outbreak. Roy Alexander Weise directs, with previews from 30th January.
Following its sold-out 2025 run, Poor by Katriona O'Sullivan returns to the Gate in spring 2026, with previews starting 14th March. Adapted by Sonya Kelly and directed by Róisín McBrinn, the play is based on O’Sullivan’s memoir tracing her journey from poverty in England to academic success in Ireland - The Gate’s acclaimed prouction will also travel to the Belgrade Theatre in the UK in May.
In May, Oscar Wilde’s An Ideal Husband is revived on the Gate stage for the first time in twelve years, with director Marc Atkinson Borrull at the helm. The play, first presented by the Gate in 1929, explores political corruption, personal integrity and social intrigue through Wilde’s trademark biting wit.
The season concludes in July with the Irish premiere of The Brightening Air, a new play written and directed by Conor McPherson. Descibed as 'an entrancing tale of fate, family and unseen forces in 1980s Ireland', this Gate Theatre presentation of an Old Vic production opens on 22nd July, following previews from 17th July.
Gate Theatre Artistic Director Róisín McBrinn said "We are very excited to welcome audiences, old and new, to the Gate and we look forward to inviting them on journeys that make them laugh, cry, and hopefully see the world a little differently."
