The Horse, an artist-run contemporary art gallery in Dublin's north inner city, is presenting Time and Space, a new solo exhibition by French-Martinican photographer Thomas Dozol.

The show runs from 7 November to 6 December.

Time and Space continues Dozol’s ongoing investigation into portraiture and temporality. Rather than capturing a single moment, his latest series explores the fluidity of time within the photographic image. The works are created by layering twelve sequential analog exposures from a single roll of film into one composition, merging gestures, environments, and psychological states into a continuous field.

The resulting portraits blur distinctions between body and space, interior and exterior, and moment and duration.

Dozol’s process begins in the studios of his subjects - friends and collaborators - whom he photographs across several rolls of film. Each roll’s exposures are then combined chronologically in his own studio. The technique, using dye-sublimation printing on aluminum, transforms film’s linear sequence into an image of temporal permeability rather than fixed instants.

The series questions photography’s traditional claim to represent truth through decisive, isolated moments, instead offering a form of portrature attuned to the lived experience of spontaniety - a place where past, present and future co-exist.

Born in 1975 in Fort-de-France, Martinique, Dozol studied applied mathematics and social sciences at Université Paris Dauphine and performing arts at the Ecole Florent in Paris. This combination of analytical and performative training has informed his photographic approach, which often fuses structure with emotional resonance.

Dozol’s first solo exhibition, I’ll Be Your Mirror (2010), explored solitude and self-perception. His 2021 show Ghost Light at Germany's NAK (Neuer Aachener Kunstverein) expanded into installation, integrating sound, text, and sculpture to examine digital mediation and information hierarchies.
