The award-winning short film Sweet Wort is a wry and wistful comedy-drama about fathers and sons, ageing, regret, and the pain of unexpressed love - watch it above.

Two brothers set out to fulfill their alcoholic father's final wish: to have his ashes left in his favourite pub. It is only when they arrive do they begin to understand the real reason behind his unusual request...

Meath filmmaker Michael Reid introduces Sweet Wort below:

"I wrote Sweet Wort to capture the beauty of the front bar in Brady's of Dunboyne, my local pub. That was the real goal. Everything else just kind of... happened around it. I’m kidding, obviously. Mostly. But that image really was the starting point. I wanted to make something funny, but with a bit of weight to it. Regret, family, drink, legacy, secrets - the usual Irish stuff. Honestly, all the stuff that interests me. And I just crammed in as much of that as I could into the 24 minutes.

Filmmaker Michael Reid directs Sweet Wort

We shot the film with a small crew, in and around Dunboyne, in the last of the Covid restrictions - somehow, it all came together. If it makes people laugh, or feel something (or both), then I'll call that a win."
