Prepare for the ultimate fan service in LEGO Batman Legacy of the Dark Knight

With over 357,000 visitors, thousands of exhibitors, countless announcements and an opening night that reached over 72 million livestream views, Gamescom has cemented itself as the biggest event in gaming this year.

Held in Cologne, Germany, this year's event has become one of the last bastions for people to meet in person and experience and hype the next big thing in gaming. From surprise trailers and announcements to plenty of demos and more, it proved that there is so much to get excited about in the coming months in gaming.

But if you didn't get to the ground floor this year, fear not – below is a flavour of announcements, trailers and release days that have set the internet alight.

A sneak peek at the upcoming Fallout season 2

With millions upon millions of viewers, the Fallout TV show has become one of the most successful and critically acclaimed gaming crossovers ever made. So it should come as no surprise that one of the major reveals at Gamescom's opening night was its highly anticipated season 2 trailer.

With the tagline 'The end of the world ain't over yet', viewers were transported back into that signature wasteland in an instant, where we see Lucy, The Ghoul and trusted companion Dogmeat finally arriving at the outskirts of the post-apocalyptic city of New Vegas.

While season 2 is set to release on December 17th, players have ample time to try out the franchise's many acclaimed titles, including 2010's Fallout: New Vegas, to get a taste of what diabolical on-screen magic there is to come.

Batman's Legacy is in LEGO

Perhaps tired of waiting for a new Batman Arkham Knight, the folks at LEGO have decided to take matters into their own hands. LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight is an upcoming love letter to the caped crusader, documenting his adventures throughout comics and cinema, from Christian Bale to Robert Pattinson, and more. Scheduled for release in 2026, it looks absolutely stellar and should have you smiling from ear to ear.

In typical LEGO game fashion, we should expect plenty of slapstick silliness, zany cut-scenes, tonnes of unlockables, and that signature co-op gameplay that makes these the ideal family game to play.

But the trailer for Legacy of the Dark Knight is promising us so much more. Flashy vehicles. Energetic combat. Matt Berry as Bane! And a seemingly enormous Gotham City to act as your playground. What more could you ask for?

Can Black Ops 7 overcome Battlefield?

Call of Duty has become a yearly staple in gaming. Every October/November, the latest first-person shooter in the twenty-year-old franchise drops to worldwide interest. But after the universal praise of last year's Black Ops 6, extra pressure is mounting on whether this year's sequel can keep up with expectations.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 comes out November 14th

From the sneak peek trailer, COD fans have lots to look forward to, as Black Ops 7 promises pristine graphics, set to the backdrop of gunfire, hellfire and explosions. The story mode looks to embrace a bit of psychological horror (because why not?), while the multiplayer has definitely upped the speed of play, honouring the game's futuristic setting.

Scheduled to release on November 14th, Black Ops 7 has enormous competition this year, and all eyes will be on its inevitable face-off against the equally anticipated Battlefield 6 (October 10th).

Xbox is entering the handheld battlefield. But at what cost?

Earlier in the year, Xbox announced that they were developing two new handhelds in collaboration with ASUS, the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X. And at Gamescom, it was finally announced that both devices will launch on October 16th, just in time for the crazy Christmas season.

So, what is the verdict so far? Many content creators, journalists and visitors to Gamescom who trialled the consoles praised them for their natural feel, the smooth gameplay during demos, and the vastly improved UI, which allows players to access games on leading PC storefronts with ease.

Unfortunately, one of the most important questions surrounding the ROG Xbox handhelds remains unanswered – the price. Given we're only a few short weeks away from release, you'll have to patiently wait until the final figure is revealed before pre-orders are opened.

Resident Evil Requiem is the stuff of nightmares.

For nearly three decades, Resident Evil has dominated horror entertainment. And in that time, you'd be forgiven for thinking that you've seen it all. Right? And then comes along Resident Evil Requiem, reminding you of the immersive power video games have to frighten you to death.

Resident Evil Requiem introduces a brand new hero to the franchise

As the ninth title in the mainline series, Requiem has been described as a 'new era' in survival horror. Featuring a new protagonist in the form of FBI agent Grace Ashcroft, the story so far is barebones, and so you're left with your own paranoia to figure out what exactly is going on.

But from the trailer (which is not for the faint-hearted!), expect lots of darkness, flashlights, and being chased mercilessly. Expect Requiem to haunt your dreams when it releases on February 27th, 2026.

Bubsy is back, new and greatly improved

Poor Bubsy. Marred with being the face of one of the worst video games ever made (Bubsy 3D is still the stuff of nightmares), the very sight of the scruffy cat is enough to make you laugh, cry and wince all at once. And while developers Atari clearly recognise their kitty was poorly received, they've now resurected him from the ashes, new, improved and set for one of the biggest comebacks in gaming.

Snippets of Bubsy 4D were revealed across Gamescom, and footage thus far has taken the masses by surprise. What we've seen is the return of that signature confidence of Bubsy, but with the polished gameplay to finally back it up. With mascot rivals Spyro and Crash Bandicoot are still in long-term hibernation, here's hoping the moggy can redeem himself; he's managed to hang around long enough to deserve another attempt.

A new World of Warcraft to settle down in

Another highlight of Gamescom was the announcement of World of Warcraft's eleventh expansion, ominously titled Midnight. From the gorgeous cinematic trailer, players could see that the stakes are at an all-time high in the game, as the Void threatens all life across Azeroth, no matter your allegiance.

World of Warcraft Midnight focuses heavily on the Blood Elves

The expansion seems to centre around the Blood Elves and their city of Silvermoon, the first target of the Void's rampage. As such, the once Horde city will become a shared space with Alliance players (a controversial sore spot between players on social media right now).

Territory squabbles aside, players can look forward to new stories, three new raids in season 1, as well as a brand new race, the Haranir, to explore. The long-awaited housing feature will also arrive with the expansion, where players can finally put down roots in Azeroth, both in public and private neighbourhoods of up to 50 houses. While no specific date has been released, online chatter points to a summer 2026 release.

The Black Myth multiverse is go

Selling over 20 million copies in just one month, Black Myth: Wukong was one of the rising stars of 2024 in gaming, bringing Chinese folklore to a worldwide audience like never before. Well, its multiverse has now been confirmed, as studio Game Science have revealed their next game – Black Myth: Zhong Kui.

Revealed at Gamescom, the game's protagonist has been described as a 'ghost-catching God who wanders between Hell and Earth'. From the exquisite cinematic, players have every right to be excited. While there is no scheduled date announced, expect this to break all manner of sales records when it does finally release.

Death By Scrolling – a future cult classic?

Gamescom had so many new, zany and unorthodox reveals to wow audiences that it would be impossible to include them all. But one of the most interesting (and downright chaotic) of these that should interest you is Death by Scrolling, a rogue-like RPG where you must race through endless 2D levels, trying to collect gold and never once daring to drop your pace.

Why? An unfriendly Grim Reaper is hot on your tracks, that's why. Collide with him and you'll meet an untimely end in your playthrough. To make the challenge even more arduous, there seems to be all manner of obstacles, enemies, traps and more to keep you on your toes. While no release date has been announced, expect this to become a bona fide cult classic.

Ghost of Yōtei

As well as showcasing games releasing in the next few years, Gamescom set the scene for the few remaining heavy hitters of 2025. And the recently released trailer of Ghost of Yōtei cemented one thing: October 2nd can't come quick enough!

Ghost of Yotei promises a co-op mode in 2026

Sequel to the 2020 masterpiece Ghost of Tsushima, Yōtei offers a brand new protagonist in the form of Atsu, but with the same signature action gameplay we all fell in love with before. In truth, it's hard to tell what is gameplay and what is cinematic with this game, given the spellbinding graphics on display.

At Gamescom, it was revealed there will also be a co-op mission adventure mode scheduled for 2026, meaning we've plenty of samurai action to look forward to with this release. And as we edge closer and closer to the Game Awards this December, could Ghost snatch a few awards away from favourites Expedition 33 and Donkey Kong Bananza? Time will tell...
