He is certainly one of the most versatile actors of his generation, having traversed genres including rom-com, sci-fi, drama and comedy over the course of his career.
Now Domhnall Gleeson is leading the charge in The Paper, the new American TV series that is a spin-off of the uber-successful US Office.
Gleeson’s turn in the mockumentary shows how accomplished he is as an actor - but what are his best roles to date? We count down the highlights to date...
10. True Grit (2010)
You may have forgotten Gleeson was in this one - but although his role as young outlaw Moon was brief in the Coen Brothers' remake of the classic western, that scene in the cabin was incredible.
9. Brooklyn (2015)
If you read and loved Colm Toibin's 2009 novel, you undoubtedly loved John Crowley’s Oscar-nominated movie adaptation. Gleeson was the perfect choice for Jim, the bachelor that Saoirse Ronan’s Eilis leaves behind in Wexford. But will he return in the role if a Long Island film happens?
8. Frank of Ireland (2021)
Gleeson had long proven his comedy chops on sketch shows like the brilliant Your Bad Self. In Frank of Ireland, he starred as Doofus, the best friend of the titular man-child who was played by his brother Brian.
7. Never Let Me Go (2010)
Mark Romanek's beautiful adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro’s dystopian novel was heartbreaking and devastating in equal measure, and Gleeson played his character - a small but important supporting role - with an understated naivety.
6. Black Mirror (2013)
Gleeson appeared in an early series of Black Mirror. In the superbly chilling episode Be Right Back (S2 Ep1), he plays Ash - a young man who is 'revived' in android form by his girlfriend following his death.
5. Frank (2014)
In Lenny Abrahamson's dark comedy - a loose telling of the Frank Sidebottom story - Gleeson played Jon (aka writer Jon Ronson), a young aspiring musician who is inadvertently drafted into Sidebottom's unconventional band.
4. Star Wars (2015 - 2019)
A role in Star Wars is something most young actors of Gleeson's generation dream about. We first met General Hux in 2015’s The Force Awakens, and he took to playing the steely-eyed villain in subsequent movies with style and panache - not to mention a convincing English accent.
3. About Time (2013)
Despite his flair for horror, sci-fi and comedy, there's no denying that Gleeson is great in rom-coms - something he hasn’t done much of over the years. He was utterly charming in Richard Curtis’s 2013 winner as Tim, a twentysomething man who discovers an ability to time travel.
2. The Patient (2022)
After an impressive run of comedies and 'nice guy' roles, it turns out that Gleeson is pretty convincing as a baddie, too. In this 2022 series, he starred as Sam Fortner - a serial killer who kidnaps his therapist (Steve Carrell) in a bid to stop his maniacal killing sprees.
1. Ex-Machina (2015)
In Alex Garland's eerie sci-fi thriller, Gleeson is excellent as young programmer Caleb, who is drawn into a murky world of AI and androids via tech bro Oscar Isaac. Is he gullible, conscientious or heroic? By the time the credits roll, you’ll still be figuring it out.
