In the 1950s Billy Clifford, son of well known musicians John and Julia Clifford, was invited to Dublin to audition for Radió Éireann with the family band 'The Star of Munster Céilí Band.
Sadly for Billy, although the audition was successful for the band, he was told he couldn't take part because the instrument he played at the time, the tin whistle, wasn’t a ‘proper instrument’!
Last Sunday night on RTÉ Radio 1's The Rolling Wave, were delighted to have been able to right this historical wrong, as Billy Clifford came to Dublin and the RTÉ Radio Centre where he was met by outgoing head of Radio 1 Peter Woods, and then played some music in Studio 8 with musician and broadcaster Peter Browne.
