Donal Ryan is a master of the layered narrative, and his award winning novel From a Low and Quiet Sea is a case in point.
In Ryan's book, the lives of three very different men are interwoven into an intricate story which explores themes of loss, identity and redemption. John is a wheeler-dealer accountant in old age reflecting on the misdeeds of his past; Lampy is a young man with a broken heart who is stuck in a dead-end job; and Farouk is a Syrian doctor who has taken refuge in Ireland after experiencing unbearable loss…

IN 2022, Decadent Theatre Company adapted the novel for the stage at the Galway International Arts Festival, followed by a tour in 2023… Now, the production comes to the Gaiety Theatre at the end of April, starring veteran actor Denis Conway in the pivotal role of John.
Conway and director Andrew Flynn talked to RTÉ Arena - listen above.
