Something for the Weekend: Emma Martin's cultural picks

Night Dances is a bold series of four dance vignettes created by acclaimed choreographer Emma Martin and her company United Fall, in collaboration with the performers and pounding music of Daniel Fox (Gilla Band).

The show played to rapturous response at Dublin Theatre Festival 2021, Edinburgh Fringe 2022 and Dublin Dance Festival 2024 - now it's touring nationwide.

We asked Emma for her choice cultural picks...

FILM

Last thing I loved was La Chimera, it was kind of meandering and slow and unshowy. The Substance was fun. The Apprentice was great. Loved Zone of Interest.

MUSIC

Really enjoying Daughter of a Drum's Pink Breath, Sour Blood’s Suas, and Macdara Yeates, Doechii and Andrew Hamilton.

BOOK

Leviathan, or the Whale by Philip Hoare - a vast immersion into the writer's obsession with whales, the ocean and our relationship to it. Also: anything written by Annie Ernaux.

THEATRE

Incantado by Brazilian choreographer Lia Rodrigues, and May B by Maguy Marin - two dance pieces I’ll never forget.

TV

Succession is the last series I followed and loved. Watched the Chernobyl series twice. Also bit of a sucker for Love on the Spectrum.

GIG

Next gig, Tyler the Creator. The last gig I was at was Hilary Woods.
