The annual celebration of cinema kicks off with a programme of top-tier new titles from across the globe (an Irish movie to catch is Darren Thornton's Four Mothers) and a guest list that includes a right and proper pair of Hollywood legends, Jessica Lange and Ed Harris. who star in a new screen version of Eugene O'Neill's Long Day's Journey Into Night (Various venues, Dublin, until Mar 2)

The City Changes Its Face is the first novel in 5 years from the author of A Girl Is a Half-formed Thing and The Lesser Bohemians - while it features the return of the male and female protagonists from the later book, it can be enjoyed as a stand-alone experience... and an experience it is, showcasing one of Ireland's finest contemporary writers at the absolute height of her powers. EVENT: RTÉ FOLK AWARDS

Dónal Lunny will be presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award at this year's RTÉ Radio 1 Folk Awards; a force of nature in Irish traditional music for more than a half-century, we can't think of a more deserving recipient.
