Bird Songs with Seán Ronayne: The Ring Ouzel

To celebrate the beginning of spring in the Gaelic calendar, ornithologist Seán Ronayne is across the schedule on RTÉ lyric fm with a new series to discuss the distinct bird songs, melodies and calls that we have today in Ireland. Listen to Sean rhapsodising about the ring ouzel above...

About The Ring Ouzel: Irish nature is facing a very serious extinction risk, like never before. Accelerated vastly by human hands. Ring Ouzel is a symbol and a sound of where many are headed if we don't change our ways right now. Once present in 28 counties, today this mountain blackbird clings on as one pair, the last of their kind. It’s a striking bird - jet black, with a pristine, white-as-snow, breast-bib, with wonderfully long silvery wings - made for travelling far and wide. It was once known well to any of our people who spent time in the hills.
