Music legend Candi Staton on getting back to her roots

Legendary singer Candi Staton started as an 11-year-old gospel prodigy, traveling across America alongside Mahalia Jackson and Sam Cooke, before making her mark in soul music at the iconic Muscle Shoals studio.

By the mid-70s, she had crossed over into disco with Young Hearts Run Free, a song that became an anthem for anyone seeking freedom from a toxic relationship—written, as it turns out, about her own.

When the dance floors faded, she found a second life in gospel music, only to be pulled back into the spotlight decades later when You Got the Love became an international dance sensation.

Staton is back with a new album called Back to My Roots, and it seems after more than seven decades in music, she still isn't ready to slow down - she talks to RTÉ Arena above.
