This week, these last few days of January slipping into February, I've been putting away the candles and candle-holders. Most of them: I’ve kept a few out.

We’ve lit a lot of candles this winter, their flames glowing inside heavy glass tea-light holders, blue and yellow, shining white in proper candlesticks, refracted and broken into gleaming shards from within the cut-glass candleholder my mother gave me...
