Sunday Miscellany: Sun and Air, by Nell Regan

On the Women Impressionists exhibition at the National Gallery of Ireland... For Sunday Miscellany on RTÉ Radio 1, listen to Sun and Air, by Nell Regan above.

In this picture that has caught our attention, a man sits on a terrace between two women, and all three of them are looking in different directions. My friend laughs – it's as if one of them has just said something really awkward. Now we’d paint them looking down, plucking at their phones.

There’s a sumptuous light in all of these scenes we’re looking at: figures in lit summer gardens, a smell of August heat, of hot grass, somehow visible and rising.
