Boxing clever - how we made low-budget fight flick Swing Bout

Filmmaker Maurice O'Carroll inroduces his new film Swing Bout, an intense crime thriller set backstage at a major boxing event - and a labout of love for all involved.

The journey to bring Swing Bout to life began during a time of uncertainty and challenge—the height of the pandemic.

Traditional avenues of film funding were mired in uncertainty. So, my producer and longtime collaborator, Sinead O'Riordan, and I made a bold decision: to push forward without waiting for anyone’s permission.

We decided to sidestep the conventional funding routes and embrace our existing a punk filmmaking spirit, attracting an army of emerging, breakout talent—both in front of and behind the camera. Our goal was to bring fresh, dynamic voices to the fore, allowing them to express themselves and make bold creative choices.

This approach not only injected new energy into the production but also ensured that Swing Bout was a film brimming with authenticity and originality. One of the most exciting aspects of the production was our ability to film at the iconic Pairc Uí Chaoimh. This wasn’t just a setting—it was a character in the story, lending authenticity to the narrative.

However, filming on location came with its own set of challenges. We had strict time restrictions with only 21 days to complete the entire film. There was zero wiggle room for error, which meant that every single person on set had to all push in the same direction and at all times. The tight schedule could have been a stumbling block, but instead, it became a catalyst for unity and creativity. Our film family of passionate individuals shared our drive and enthusiasm. And on set, we fostered an environment where everyone felt safe to take risks and express their ideas.

This sense of safety and encouragement allowed our team to make bold, innovative choices that elevated the film to a level we could only have dreamed of when we started. Every film set encounters its share of unexpected challenges, and Swing Bout was no exception. However, the sheer talent and determination of our team helped us navigate through each hurdle. It was a true testament to what can be achieved when everyone is rowing in the same direction, driven by a shared passion and commitment to the project.

While sharing Swing Bout with an audience is undoubtedly a thrilling part of the filmmaking process, for me, the most rewarding aspect has always been the creation itself. There is something deeply fulfilling about collaborating with insanely talented people, learning from their perspectives, and growing together as artists. It’s in those moments—when creativity and humanity intersect—that the true magic of filmmaking happens.

As we share Swing Bout in cinemas across Ireland, I’m filled with gratitude for the ilife-changing journey we’ve been on. This film is more than just a story on screen—it’s a testament to what can be achieved when determination, creativity and passion come together and unite.

Swing Bout is currently on release in selected cinemas nationwide.
