Via The Journal Of Music: Following a call for applications last December, Joe Csibi, the current General Manager of the RTÉ Concert Orchestra, has been appointed Head of Orchestra and Chorus at the National Concert Hall (NCH).
The role will see Csibi head up the National Symphony Orchestra and National Symphony Chorus, both of which moved from RTÉ to the NCH in January 2022 following a 2018 report by Helen Boaden.
Csibi succeeds Anthony Long who was General Manager of the National Symphony Orchestra from March 2017 and oversaw its transfer from RTÉ. Long moved into a new position as Head of Strategic Projects at the NCH last year. Since August 2023, the NSO has been managed by Nigel Flegg, Acting Head of Performance & Learning at the NCH, with programming overseen by Gary Sheehan, Acting Head of Programming at the NCH.
Csibi is a former member of the National Symphony Orchestra as a double bass player. He subsequently spent eight years with Riverdance as a musician and musical director and followed this with a role at Wexford Festival Opera as orchestra contractor, manager and education supervisor. He was appointed General Manager of RTÉ Concert Orchestra in 2019. During his tenure, Stephen Bell was appointed Principal Guest Conductor, Gavin Maloney was appointed Associate Principal Conductor, and Guy Barker and Zoë Conway were appointed Associate Artists.
Commenting on his new role at the NCH, Csibi said: "I am thrilled to be taking up this role at this particular time. I believe very strongly in the power of brilliant symphonic, choral and orchestral music. The future holds exciting adventures for the NCH family, of which the National Symphony Orchestra and National Symphony Chorus are such an important part. I look forward to working with all the dynamic and enthusiastic musicians, artists, singers and teams at the NCH and the broader music and arts community to create world class music experiences for the present and for the future".
Csibi will take up his new position in the autumn.
