EVENT: MUSIC CURRENT 2024

Dublin Sound Lab's essential contemporary music festival returns, showcasing some of the best Irish and international contemporary musicmakers. The festival will host 5 new concerts, Black Page Orchestra, Tak Ensemble, lovemusic collective and the return of Nadar Ensemble, as well as workshops on AI, electronic music and new composition, and discussions exploring cutting edge new music and the future of music (Project Arts Centre, Dublin, April 2nd - 6th)

MUSIC: BABEL

Oft-dubbed 'The Godfather Of Irish Electronic Music', composer Roger Doyle is enjoying a moment, with electro-diva Caroline Polachek covering his track Spring Is Coming With a Strawberry in the Mouth, along with the re-release of his 1999 masterpiece Babel; a decade in the making, Babel features over 100 pieces and almost 50 collaborators, guiding the listener through the composer's virtual tower of Babel, with each piece corresponding to a room within an imagined giant tower city. Celebrating its 26th anniversary, it's a monumental work (Now streaming, also on CD and vinyl)

THEATRE: THE KITE RUNNER

Bringing best-selling books to the stage has definitely been in vogue of late; based on Afghan-American author Khaled Hosseini's international bestselling novel (also a 2007 movie), this haunting tale of friendship spans cultures and continents and follows one man's journey to confront his past and find redemption - the theatrical adaptation comes to Dublin via successful Broadway and West End runs (Gaiety Theatre, Dublin, April 2nd - 6th)

FILM: GODZILLA X KONG/KUNG FU PANDA 4/MARY POPPINS

A trio of family treats on the big-screen for the Easter hols; Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire sees the return of two of the biggest stars in the movies for a rather unlikely (and very, very loud) buddy movie, while Kung-Fu Panda 4 brings back Jack Black's lovable furball for another kick-ass adventure - if it all seems a bit busy, you can't go wrong with a 60th anniversary re-release of one of the great Disney live action (with a sprinkling of animation) musicals. It's still supercalifragilisticexpialidocious (Cinemas nationwide)

STREAMING: THE BEAUTIFUL GAME

In this rousing drama inspired by a true-life tale, Mal, the manager of England's homeless soccer team, leads them to the Homeless World Cup in Rome, where he takes a gamble by adding a talented but troubled striker who must overcome his past to become a team player. Produced by Colin Farrell, this tale of second chances stars the great Bill Nighy, leading an ensemble that includes our very own Tom Vaughan-Lawlor (Netflix, now streaming)
