The Hunter is the ninth novel from bestselling author Tana French – it's a sequel to her 2020 book, The Searcher, which introduced the characters, Cal Hooper, a retired cop from Chicago, and Trey Reddy, a half-wild teenager living in the west of Ireland.
The two struck up a friendship in The Searcher when Cal moved to her village Ardnakelty, looking for a quiet life and getting anything but when Trey's brother Brendan goes missing.
The Hunter picks up two years on. This time, Trey’s errant father Johnny turns up out of the blue, back from London with tall tales, on a treasure hunt for gold, that’s not going to do anybody any good.
