The much-loved Sultans of Ping FC and their debut album Casual Sex In The Cineplex get name-checked far more often than you might realise.
It’s the album that gave us the singles ‘Where’s Me Jumper?, ‘Stupid Kid’ and ‘You Talk Too Much’, and saw the band become part of a new generation of Irish artists that had a different view on what it was to be Irish.
Along with fellow Cork bands The Frank & Walters, Emperor Of Icecream, and other Irish acts like The Cranberries, Power Of Dreams, and Therapy, it seemed like there was a new energy in the music coming out of Ireland in the early 1990s.
In the latest instalment of 2fm DJ Dan Hegarty’s The Story Of series is a 60-minute deep dive into The Sultans' Casual Sex In The Cineplex album featuring interviews with Niall and Morty from the band, as well as Dave Fanning, producer Ian Wilson, Angela Dorgan of FMC (First Music Contact), Simon Carmody of The Golden Horde, and members of Fight Like Apes, and Cork band Pretty Happy.
Broadcast on RTÉ 2fm, the documentary tells the story (or at least some of them!) of how the album came to be - listen above.
