A beloved grandmother's Christmas promise...

My grandmother and my aunt Angela had this happy little ritual that they observed every Friday lunchtime. Granny would buy fresh cod from the fish stall on Lower George's Street in Dun Laoghaire and Angela would arrive with two singles from the chipper opposite the shrine to Our Lady on Oliver Plunkett Road.  

They’d sit in my granny’s kitchen and they’d eat this fish and chips and catch up on the news – which, increasingly with the passing years, centred on who had featured in the obituary columns in the past seven days, and who was likely to make it in there next...
