Turning Heads: Rubens Rembrandt and Vermeer is at the National Gallery of Ireland

VISUAL ART: TURNING HEADS

The new exhibition at the National Gallery features works by Dutch and Flemish artists of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries who were exponents of the tronie – an intriguing painting of a head. Noteworthy paintings include Study of an Old Woman by Rubens, The Laughing Man by Rembrandt and The Man with the Golden Helmet from the circle of Rembrandt. Vermeer's most exquisitely detailed tronie, Girl with the Red Hat is an exhibition highlight (National Gallery of Ireland, Dublin, until May 26th 2024)

CINEMAS: DUNE PART TWO

If there was ever a vivid argument for the cinema experience, then it's the eagerly anticipated second installment of Denis Villeneuve's adaptation of Frank Herbert's sci-fi masterwork, shot for IMAX and made to be seen on the biggest, loudest screen imaginable. Returning cast members Timothee Chalamet and Zendaya are joined by the likes of Florence Pugh, Elvis breakthrough Austin Butler and Christopher Walken - as the Emperor of The Universe, naturally (Cinemas nationwide)

THEATRE: AUDREY OR SORROW

In an old house somewhere in Ireland, a young mother watches over her sleeping baby. But, in Marina Carr's dark and dangerously funny new play, nothing is as it seems... A new work by Carr is always a theatrical event; this Abbey co-production with Landmark Productions is the first of two world premieres this year, marking her 60th birthday. Abbey Catriona McLaughlin directs a formidable cast that includes Marie Mullen, Anna Healy, Aisling O'Sullivan and Zara Devlin (Abbey Theatre, Dublin, until 30th March 2024)

MUSIC: DRY

The new collection of solo piano music from popular German composer Nils Frahm, much loved for his epic electronic live shows sees the Berlin-based artist pare his sound way, way back to its roots, with a delicate collection he suggests might best be enjoyed in the manner in which it was recorded - in the intimacy of a peaceful, cosy room (March 1st, available for download and on physical formats)
