Na Peirsigh/Persians: Europe's oldest known surviving play comes to the Abbey, as gaeilge

The last time director Conor Hanratty and actor Caitríona Ní Mhurchú spoke to RTÉ Arena, Caitríona was playing the opera singer Maria Callas in Terrence McNally's award-winning play Masterclass.

Now they’re back together in the Irish-language production Na Peirsigh, in which she plays the Queen of Persia!

Persians, by Aeschylus, is said to be Europe’s oldest surviving play. It tells the story of the Battle of Salamis in 480 BCE– a David v Goliath battle in which the Greeks unexpectedly triumphed over the all-powerful Persians.

Nuala Ní Dhomhnaill has translated Na Peirsigh as gaeilge – cast includes Bríd Ní Neachtain, Seamus Moran and Marion O’Dwyer – and it opens at the Peacock Theatre, Dublin in early March.

For RTÉ Arena, Caitríona Ní Mhurchú and Conor Hanratty joined Kay in studio - listen above.
