Sunday Miscellany: And Parnell Loved His Lass, by Lourdes Mackey

One of the great love stories in Irish political history... For Sunday Miscellany on RTÉ Radio 1, listen to And Parnell Loved His Lass, by Lourdes Mackey above.

The fall of Charles Stewart Parnell, who brought Ireland to the brink of Home rule in the late 19th century, has inspired stories, songs and poems. Here's Yeats, from his poem Come Gather Round Me Parnellites…

The Bishops and the party,

A husband that had sold his wife,

And after that betrayed.

But stories that live longest,

Are sung above the glass.

And Parnell loved his country,

And Parnell loved his lass....

Charles Stewart Parnell and Katherine O'Shea
