It was a beautiful day in La Paz in January, the height of the Bolivian summer. I was heading for la Valle de las Ánimas, the valley of the souls, a geological curiousity formed from volcanic rock whose name suggested magic and incantations and all sorts of things that the boy in me still relished from growing up on tales of adventure.
Where the bus dropped me off however was hardly what you'd call mysterious. Instead I found myself amidst rubble-strewn streets, half-built or falling-down houses clinging to the hillside...
