Finnish filmmaker Aki Kaurismaki is one of the living greats of world cinema, and a new movie from him feels like an early Christmas gift. Fallen Leaves takes place in Helsinki, where two lonely souls in search of love meet by chance in a karaoke bar. However, their path to happiness is beset by obstacles - from lost phone numbers to mistaken addresses, alcoholism, and a charming stray dog (Selected cinemas nationwide)

ART: SELF DETERMINATION: A GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE
One of the largest exhibitions in the Irish Museum of Modern Art's history focuses - in a timely fashion - on the nation-states that emerged in the wake of the First World War, exploring the role of art and artists in relation to the expression of national identities, nation-building, and statecraft (IMMA, Dublin, until 21 April 2024)

TV: IMOGEN FROM THE HEART
Imogen from the Heart is a fascinating new RTÉ arts documentary about one of Ireland's most celebrated artists, sculptor Imogen Stuart - now in her mid 90's, Stuart is still busy creating. Her grandson Emile Dinneen has spent the last 13 years filming her, giving us an intimate window into how she has coped with loss and tragedy while sharing her views on family, art, religion, and the meaning of life. STREAMING: SLOW HORSES
If you haven't caught up with this darkly funny espionage drama following a team of British intelligence agents serving in a dumping ground department of MI5 due to various career-ending mistakes, the third season is a perfect place to begin. Based on the series of novels by Mick Herron, it features a career-best performance (and that's saying something) from the incomparable Gary Oldman as crumplred spymaster Jackson Lamb (Apple TV+, from Friday 1 December)
