Something For The Weekend: Celaviedmai's Cultural Picks

Rising artist Celaviedmai has become one of the most exciting new names in Irish hip-hop.

2023 has been a major year for the Galway-born artist, with a trio of London shows, an opening slot for Kelis in Dublin, a breakthrough artist accolade with Gay Times, and festival performances at Longitude, Body & Soul and Electric Picnic.

Later this month, she appears at the October Nights festival in Mayo.

We asked Celaviedmai for her choice cultutal picks...

FILM

Barbie the movie! When I went to the premiere I wasn't really expecting much other than a bomb soundtrack. But it was actually so good.

MUSIC

One of my favourite artists that I take a lot of inspiration from at the moment is Doechii. Her song Persuasive is still on repeat for me right now. It's taken me a while to find artists I can truly relate to, because I think my sound and stage presence is quite unique in Ireland. Doechii is an incredible example of a memorable artist with wow factor.

THEATRE

I'm not into theatre, but if this counts - The Nutcracker ballet … it’s giving Barbie!

TV

I don't have too much time for TV if I'm honest. But when I do get to chill out, I like guilty pleasures and at the moment that's Love is Blind.

GIG

SZA played in the 3Arena during the summer and it absolutely blew me away. It made me realise how much I have to learn when it comes to dancing while performing and it was so motivating for me. I'm getting ready for my first headline Irish tour this winter, but while I'm rehearsing for that I'm playing October Nights in Ballina on Oct 29th - I can't wait to bring the energy to Mayo!

ART

I’m not too into art but I went to a music event called Serendipity Sessions in Hen’s Teeth recently… and they have amazing art on the walls there, it was so nice to look around. They always have cool pop ups there.

RADIO

I love Tea with Toshin on RTE Pulse, she plays really great Irish music and interviews the kind of artists that I want to hear more of on Irish radio. I hope she gets her own slot on 2FM someday! She's such a great host.

PODCAST

I definitely listen to podcasts more than radio these days. I always have a few I dip into, but there's one called Get The Gist that I'm obsessed with lately. It’s perfect to listen to on commutes or travelling - cause it feels like you're in the room with your besties, gossiping or just talking about whatever. I was on their podcast recently and it was a lot of fun, it's on YouTube - go check it out!

THE NEXT BIG THING...

Celaviedmai of course! I've been in music for a few years, but the past 12-18 months for me have been crazy. From supporting Kelis when she was in Dublin, to doing my first UK festivals, announcing my winter headline Irish tour and a new wave of music coming out... it feels so good to finally be recognised for the hard work... but it's just the beginning!

Celaviedmai's new single Cool Ya Temper is out now. She performs at October Nights in Ballina Arts Centre on October 29th - find out more here.
