Sunday Miscellany: Joanne Hynes on her coming of age as an artist

A fashion student trawls London markets in pursuit of broken chandeliers, and her own artistic instincts... For Sunday Miscellany on RTÉ Radio 1, listen to What Can You Do? by Joanne Hynes above.

"What can you do that no one else can do?" she huffed from behind her desk in that smoke filled room on Charing Cross Road, this formidable woman who was to become, in time, a great mentor to me.

She was pulling hard on her cigarette with one silver ringed hand while turning the pages of my sketch books with the other. It was my first London winter in art school, a masters in St Martin's College, 1999...

Joanne Hynes will be in conversation with Dr Rebecca Bell next Thursday, 20th of July at 6pm, at the Kevin Kavanagh Gallery in Dublin, ahead of the opening of her exhibition there, What We Carry With Us, and that exhibition runs till the 5th of August. See kevinkavanagh.ie for details.
