Aingeala Flannery has won this year's Kerry Group Irish Novel of the Year Award for her book The Amusements.

The award, which is worth E20,000 was presented tonight at the opening night of Listowel Writer's Week in Co Kerry.

Judges Patrick Gale and Manveen Rana described the novel as 'painfully funny', and 'arrestingly original in its layered portrayal of a community at once tight and divided'.

The Pigott Poetry Prize, which is worth E12,000 was presented to Tom French for his book Company.

Stephen Rea

The John B. Keane Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to Stephen Rea by Seamus O'Hara.

Other authors appearing at this year's Writers Week include Richard Ford, Paul Muldoon, Victoria Kennefick, Michael Magee and Megan Nolan.
