My son Dónal was a boy who couldn't wait to get going. Looking back, it seems like he hardly ever got a full night’s sleep when he was a child, because he had too much to do, he was too busy planning things, organising things. He was walking at nine months.

Playing rugby from five or six. He used to say to his sister, Gemma, who was two years older, Don’t you learn to drive before me.

I’d tell him, Dónal, you need to have more patience. But it was hard to be authoritative when he was taller than me by the time he was 11! I’d stand on the first step of the stairs to give out to him, so he wasn’t towering over me.

He was always generous, one of life’s givers...
