"I can't go," said my friend John in a hushed and disappointed tone. "So you can have my ticket and bus seat I suppose- but you owe me!" I stood there, weak with excitement. I wanted to hug my dear friend so much, but teenage lads wearing leather biker jackets in 1980s Ireland didn't hug each other, at least not in northwest Donegal where we lived. So all I said was, "ah right, deadly!"

My remaining challenge was to get permission from my parents, but my mother just said, "go ahead-as long as you mind yourself," and she even paid for my ticket.
