It was the last thing she would have expected, or indeed wanted.
But when Camille Souter pulled off her trademark black crochet beret in my garden a good many years ago, all I could think of was John Keats' glorious poem:
I met a lady in the meads,/Full beautiful – a faery’s child,/Her hair was long, her foot was light,/ And her eyes were wild.

Camille Souter was no "belle dame sans merci". She was notably gentle and unpretentious despite the acclaim she received for her painting and the many honours heaped upon her over the years...
