The death has been announced of artist Camille Souter, Irish painter and member of Aosdana.

Born in the UK but brought up in Ireland, Camille Souter trained as a nurse in London before turning to painting in the 1950s and exhibited extensively from the 1960s onwards.

In a statement, Kevin Rafter, chair of the Arts Council described her as one of Ireland's most enduring painters, who sought to "capture the raw, unfiltered beauty that she saw in everyday places and commonplace things with a singularly tenacious resolve".

He said her output is absolutely unique in the context of Irish art.

Director of the Arts Council Maureen Kennelly said Camille Souter produced an extraordinary body of work over the course of almost 70 years and that her profound contribution to the visual arts in Ireland can't be underestimated.

Her family say she died peacefully in her 94th year.
