It's finally happening. My bank is leaving town. But…all banks are the same, no? Unless, of course, the bank that’s "leaving" you has chimed with some of the most significant moments in your life.

My family moved back from North America when I was a young teenager, and my father’s first business was located in a tiny attic room at the top of an old stone building on the corner of College Green overlooking Trinity College.

To visit him at work, I had to climb a high turret, its winding stairway lit only by small, occasional windows which trickled daylight across the twisting stairs, each step higher and darker, until I reached the shadowed landing that led to my father’s office door. Opening that door was always a wonder...
