Something For The Weekend: Pat Kinevane's cultural picks

Pat Kinevane is a native of Cobh, Co. Cork. He has worked as an actor in theatre, film, television and radio for 33 years.

Pat has been touring since 2006 with a quartet of acclaimed solo pieces, produced for Fishamble: The New Play Company: Forgotten, Silent, Underneath and Before, winning a Laurence Olivier Award in London in 2016 for his Outstanding Achievement as an actor and writer.

Now he's joining forces again with Fishamble to present the world premiere of King, a new solo piece, directed by regular collaborator Jim Culleton.

We asked Pat for his choice cultural picks...

FILM

Respect, the story of the life of legendary Aretha Franklin. I saw it in 2021 and it still stays with me. It stars the magnificent Jennifer Hudson, and Forest Whitaker. The acting is top shelf and the music is breathtaking. I sang along with all the tracks in the cinema at the top of my voice!

MUSIC

Renaissance, the most recent album from Beyonce Knowles. The homage to pure disco is so cleverly spun through this multi layered plush rug of music art. Every track is a banger.

ART

Brian Fay has an exhibition called The Most Recent Forever which runs soon at the West Cork Arts Centre in Skibbereen! Up the Rebel County! Go Brian! Rebels, go and see Brian's remarkable work!!

THEATRE

I hope I get the chance to see Eva O Connor’s Horse Play in Glass Mask Theatre on Dawson St. in Dublin in mid-March. Eva is so talented, and Rex and Migle run a beautiful venue producing a wide array of brilliant shows.

TV

Pamela, a love story! The red swimsuit is off! The real Ms Anderson is finally on dry land and an authentic wonderful woman is revealed.

GIG

Eddi Reader plays the Pavilion Dun Laoghaire in March. I have to get to see her. I love her voice and her renditions of Robert Burns poetry and songs are heartbreaking. The last proper big gig I saw was in Edinburgh last August and it was the stunning Camille O'Sullivan. I could have sat through it all again for days. Camille is world class. I felt really humbled to be there.

RADIO

Sunshine 106.8! Can’t bate a bit of Sunshine!

TECH

Duolingo... brushing up on my German. We did a 2-week tour in Germany last September and my school Deutsch got me through. I want to be more confident next time we play there. I love the language.

THE NEXT BIG THING...

A great young actor named John Rice, from Kilkenny. He is studying in London right now and is a rare and unique talent. Look out... this guy is gonna be a household name in the future. And a second young man who is gonna take on the rap world – my son Kez! He is richly and originally talented, and I am super proud of him.

The Irish tour of King kicks off at Glór, Ennis on 23rd February, with dates in Limerick, Galway, Letterkenny, Longford, Port Laoise, Dun Laoghaire and Tralee - find out more here.
